Who We Are

The Sunday Odejide Memorial Foundation (SOMF) is a nonprofit organization with a dual mission. Firstly, we strive to raise awareness about the challenges associated with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder affecting many individuals worldwide. Our goal is to encourage early detection, effective management, and support for those living with the condition. Secondly, SOMF is committed to empowering two key groups in our local community. We provide specialized vocational training and a robust support system to individuals affected by sickle cell disease, enabling them to lead more independent lives. We also extend a helping hand to underprivileged community members, offering free vocational training to equip them with valuable skills, ultimately improving their quality of life. Our mission combines education and empowerment to positively impact the lives of those facing these challenges.

"According to Nigeria's health Ministry Every year, an estimated 100,000 kids are diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in Nigeria, and up to 80% die before they turn five."

“In Nigeria, the burden of sickle cell disease is overwhelming. With a staggering number of affected individuals, we face a crisis of immense proportions. Sickle cell disease is a silent battle that affects millions across the nation, creating hardships that extend beyond health challenges.

Statistics reveal that a significant portion of the population, approximately 2 in every 5 people, carry the sickle cell trait. This translates to a substantial number of Nigerians grappling with the genetic disorder’s challenges. Sickle cell disease not only inflicts physical and emotional suffering but also exerts a considerable economic toll on families.

The gravity of the situation is further exacerbated by inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited access to quality treatment, and insufficient awareness. These factors place an overwhelming burden on affected individuals, families, and communities, pushing many into the depths of despair.
